Nominations open for NEA’s National Medal of Arts

NOMINATION DEADLINE: Friday, September 15, 2023

Let us acknowledge, at the outset, that we at the South Carolina Arts Commission are partial to the South Carolina Governor’s Awards for the Arts.

(Spoiler alert: More on that coming the Tuesday after Labor Day.)

But our partners and friends at the National Endowment for the Arts have this thing called the National Medal of the Arts, and it’s pretty cool too. Something about going to the White House and meeting the president gives it a little extra “oomph.”

Today, the NEA opened nominations for the next round of medalists. It is the highest award given to arts and arts patrons by the U.S. government, and every year the president presents it to those who “…are deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts in the United States.”

There are certainly South Carolinians who deserve recognition for same, and you can use this link to nominate them from today through Sept. 15.

If, by some slim chance, you want to nominate a South Carolinian who fits the bill but hasn’t been recognized with the Governor’s Award, well… just wait until the Tuesday after Labor Day. But that’s all The Hub can say for now.
