Sumter County Gallery of Art announces new director

Experienced S.C. arts professional to lead award-winning gallery

The Sumter County Gallery of Art (SCGA) announced the appointment of Dr. La Ruchala Murphy as its new executive director.

A “visionary arts leader, educator, and nonprofit strategist” according to a news release, Murphy brings more than 20 years of experience in cultural leadership, grants management, and community capacity-building to her new role.

The Sumter County Gallery of Art—a cornerstone of the region’s creative life—serves Sumter, Lee, and Clarendon counties through exhibitions, arts education, and community programming. It was a 2025 recipient of the S.C. Governor’s Award for the Arts in the organization category.

“The arts are a major part of my life. They gave me voice, confidence, discipline, and community. They showed me that creativity is about building meaningful lives and stronger communities. I am honored to bring my passion for the arts and service to Sumter, Lee, and Clarendon counties and to work alongside artists, educators, families, and partners to ensure that everyone sees themselves reflected in our gallery,” she said.

Murphy holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Master of Arts in arts administration, a Master of Science in nonprofit administration, and a doctorate in organizational leadership from Columbia International University. Her professional expertise includes grants management, leadership capacity building, relationship-building, program development, and data management to sustain and grow vibrant cultural institutions. She was the South Carolina Arts Commission’s first arts industry director, serving arts organizations statewide.

She is an active member of the South Carolina Federation of Museums, Association of Arts Administration Educators, National Association of Nonprofit Organizations & Executives, and Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, reflecting her dedication to continuous learning and sector-wide collaboration.

Murphy’s plans for SCGA include continuing to provide free access to exhibition galleries, support emerging and established artists, and expand educational programming through the Elizabeth White School of Art. She envisions enhanced community partnerships, increased youth and family engagement, and innovative programming that bridges tradition and contemporary creative practice.

“As we look to the future, the gallery will remain a welcoming space where art connects generations, cultures, and ideas,” she said. “Together, we will cultivate creativity and inspire possibility.”
