One Columbia opens call to artists for studio space

Early-career artists sought

APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 3, 2024 by 5 p.m. ET

One Columbia for Arts and Culture is offering studio space to working early career artists who want to be a part of a collaborative environment.

This is a one-year opportunity for approximately 225 square feet of shared studio space with access to a utility sink, classroom space, and restrooms. The lease term is June 1, 2024, through May 31, 2025. Deposit of $200/per year (includes utilities) is due before the studio is occupied.

Selected artists must maintain a commitment to working in their studios 20 hours a week and participate in select programming. They are required to present one class, workshop, or arts event at the space each month that is accessible to the general public.

According to One Columbia, eligible artists must identify as emerging or early career. They acknowledge the lack of a rigid definition that leaves room for interpretation, but claim they have embraced this out of a recognition of the many variables that impact artists’ careers.

Opportunities afforded to artists can differ based on discipline, race/ethnicity, class, gender, physical ability, and geography among other factors. However, age is not a determining factor in the selection process, according to Public Art Administrator Pamela Zeljak.

“An emerging artist is different from an avocational, academic, amateur or educational artist,” Zeljak explains. “We support artists who show significant potential yet are under-recognized. This may include artists who have less than five years of professional experience in their chosen artistic field; artists with only a few group exhibitions or small solo shows; or artists whose works are typically sold on the primary market, meaning that they arrive to collectors directly from the artist’s studio.

So, selection is based on:

  • Meeting application requirements.
  • Willingness to lead a class, workshop or arts event each month in the space.
  • Readiness for program participation based on the Artist’s CV, Artist Statement, and work examples.
  • Description of why the artist would like to be a part of the collective.

You are eligible to apply if:

  • You are 18+ years of age
  • You’ve been a resident of Columbia for one year
  • You are a local to the city of Columbia

The deadline to apply is May 3, 2024 by 5 p.m. ET. This program values inclusion, kindness, accessibility, and representation. Artists can find the application on onecolumbiasc.com.
