A cornerstone of Bluffton’s creative community for more than 25 years is facing a critical turning point after the buildings it has occupied since 2011 and 2012 were sold.

The Society of Bluffton Artists (SOBA) currently occupies buildings on Church Street in Old Town Bluffton, part of a long-time South Carolina Cultural District. SOBA announced yesterday that those buildings are in the process of being sold.

SOBA’s Karen Richards told The Hub they were notified in the last week of October that the buildings were put up for sale. A buyer was found in two weeks’ time. She said SOBA is hoping to remain in the 6 Church St. building through March 2026, but that a 60-day notice to vacate could come at any time.

“At this time, we do not know the prospective buyer’s intent … however we do not have reason to believe we will be able to stay,” Richards said.

To continue its mission of supporting local artists and enriching the Lowcountry’s cultural life, SOBA launched the “Help SOBA Find a New Home” campaign to raise $100,000 toward the purchase or lease of a new facility. The funds will help the organization act quickly when a suitable space becomes available — protecting its ability to host exhibits, classes, and workshops without interruption.

“For decades, SOBA has been more than just a gallery — it’s been the heart of Bluffton’s art community. We’re asking our neighbors, art lovers, and local businesses to help us keep that heart beating strong,” the organization said in a news release.

SOBA’s gallery is an established gathering place for artists of all levels to display their work, take part in workshops, and inspire creativity in the Lowcountry community. The organization provides year-round classes for children and adults and offers art scholarships to local students pursuing higher education.
