South Arts offers professional development + artistic planning grants

Funding up to $1,000 is available

As part of its efforts to advance Southern vitality through the arts, South Arts offers a limited number of Professional Development and Artistic Planning grants to nonprofit performing, visual, media/film, multidisciplinary and literary arts presenting organizations in its nine-state region with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. South ArtsFunding up to $1,000 is available to support the professional development needs of Southern presenters/programmers/curators, strengthen program design, and increase organizational capacity. For the purposes of these guidelines, “presenters” are defined as organizations that present or host guest artists for engagements in their communities. These grants are very limited and awarded on a first-come/first-served basis, so early submission is encouraged. A dollar-for-dollar cash match is a requirement. This grant program provides assistance for a wide-range of professional development opportunities supporting resources needed to succeed in the work of presenting. In the past, these grants have been used for:
  • traveling to see the work of artists being considered for future presentations, or to expand the presenters’ knowledge of an artform;
  • participating in a significant professional development opportunity; and
  • hosting an artist planning visit.

New funding partner for potential arts businesses

  • Central Carolina Community Foundation to help develop Midlands arts-based businesses
  • Joins statewide initiative begun by S.C. Arts Commission and CommunityWorks of Greenville
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Midlands artisans hoping to turn a passion into a business in the New Year now have help from Central Carolina Community Foundation as it joins an S.C. Arts Commission initiative. Central Carolina Community Foundation (CCCF) joins ArtsGrowSC, a new program that combines the strengths of the S.C. Arts Commission and Greenville-based CommunityWorks, a community development finance institution, to offer qualifying artists resources – including a savings program, micro-loans, business venture loans, matching grants, personalized coaching, and workshops – that will help develop and grow arts-based business ventures. ArtsGrowSC is being implemented to allow arts-based businesses to further contribute to the $9.2 billion generated by South Carolina’s core creative industries. Involvement by CCCF will increase the number of artisans who can open Individual Development Accounts (IDA’s), specifically in its 11-county service area. CommunityWorks serves as a statewide IDA funding partner for the matched savings program. Artists who use an IDA to save would see a 2:1 match, so a savings of $1,000 would be matched by $1,000 from one of the participating funders, based on artist location, and another $1,000 from the Arts Commission. Additional avenues of support from ArtsGrowSC include personal development and business coaching workshops that lead to the next-step Artists Ventures Initiative (AVI) grant program. AVI provides one-time grants to encourage the creation of artist-driven, arts-based business ventures that will provide career satisfaction and sustainability for S.C. artists. Grants can be used to launch a new venture or significantly alter an existing venture. A one-time project could receive up to $3,500, and on-going business ventures can get up to $5,000. The deadline to submit a letter of intent to seek an AVI grant is Jan. 18. AVI grantees may then qualify for the Business Builder Loan program, wherein CommunityWorks could lend qualifying artists up to $15,000 to expand their ventures. Save the date! The South Carolina Arts Commission invites session proposals for the 2017 Statewide Arts Conference scheduled for Sept. 14 - 15 at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia. The conference, a featured event on the Arts Commission's 50th Anniversary calendar, kicks off Thursday, Sept. 14 with an evening plenary and reception and continues Friday, Sept. 15 with a full day of sessions.   • Proposal is not commercial in nature.

Free workshop for middle school and high school drama teachers

Challenge yourself artistically and develop practical classroom strategies Middle and high school drama teachers from across South Carolina are invited to the Voice for the Actor workshop taking place Friday, March 11, from 6 - 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville. Participants will  join Candace Dickinson (SCGSAH Drama Department Voice faculty member and professional opera singer) in exploring lessons learned from Patsy Rodenburg’s Shakespeare’s Heightened Language workshop series. This professional development opportunity will address each participant’s vocal strengths and needs through individual and ensemble work while offering practical resources to share with students. Continuing education credits are offered. Hotel and meal accommodations are provided. There is no cost to attend, however a $50 refundable deposit is required to secure your reservation. Performing arts presenters invited to apply for South Arts’ Dance Touring Initiative

Nonprofit performing arts presenters across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are encouraged to visit the Dance Touring Initiative area of South Arts’ website for information about applying to be part of the upcoming third cohort to receive training and support in presenting modern dance. The application deadline is Jan. 23, 2015. Through DTI, two cohorts totaling 20 performing arts presenters in eight Southern states have received training and support in all aspects of presenting modern dance. Participants in the two cohorts have traveled to dance festivals including Jacob’s Pillow and American Dance Festival, worked with specialists to gain deeper understanding of the wide artistic range of the art forms, and received subsidies to engage leading companies for performances and residencies. The initiative, launched in 2009, is building a broad and deep network of performing arts presenters throughout the South that can bring modern dance and contemporary ballet companies as part of their season for public performances and artist residencies.Two South Carolina organizations, Ballet Spartanburg and Coker College Department of Dance in Hartsville, were chosen as participants for the initial cohort in 2009. National Artist Teacher Fellowships for public arts school teachers

The Center for Arts in Education invites arts teachers from public arts high schools and Title 1 high schools and middle schools to apply for funding for artistic development through its National Artist Teacher Fellowship program. Join us in celebrating 15 years of the NATF program, which offers arts teachers the opportunity to immerse themselves in their own creative work, interact with other professional artists, and stay current with new practices. The purpose of this Fellowship is to expand and/or rejuvenate the applicant’s artistic range and abilities in their artistic practice. Teachers will be expected to design a fellowship program that provides opportunities to enhance their understanding of current techniques, activity, and thinking in their artistic domain(s). It may include: study in arts courses; attendance at advanced art-making workshops, festivals or institutes; residencies at artists’ colonies; formal mentor relationships with recognized professional artists; independent study towards the completion of an artistic project (which includes interaction with other professionals), or other artistic entities. Up to 20 awards of $5,500 each will be made, with a complementary grant of $1,500 to the Fellow’s school to support post-fellowship activities. The fellowship award is for the Fellow to use towards the completion of their project experience. It may be used to defray the cost of tuition and other fees, room and board, travel, purchase of materials and/or equipment for personal art-making, childcare, mentor fees, and other relevant expenses. The post-fellowship funds are to be used at the discretion of the Fellow for the benefit of their students, school and classroom. All arts disciplines are eligible: visual arts, photography, theatre, stage design (sound, lighting, set design), music, dance, film, video, multidiscipline, architecture and creative writing. Proposals which will not be considered include: participation in educational conferences; art therapy; development of pedagogy; academic research or graduate study; curriculum building; learning of new skills solely towards the development of new courses; or accreditation. Who's eligible?

  • Schools must:*
    • Be a public arts high school, magnet school, or charter school with the primary mission of fostering the development of artistic talent; or a Title 1 middle or high school with a sequential arts program.
    • Offer sequential arts courses as a requirement for graduation
    • Employ artists as teachers
  • Arts teachers must:
    • Be permanently assigned full- or part-time faculty (teaching a minimum of six hrs/week in an arts discipline)
    • Be minimally in their fifth year of teaching arts at the high school or middle school level (middle school educators must be from a Title 1 schools)
Previous NATF and Surdna Fellows (Rounds 1-14) are ineligible to apply for 2015 NATF program. *The 2015 NATF program includes arts teachers at Title 1 schools that have demonstrated a commitment to using the arts to improve student engagement and achievement. Please note that teachers from high schools that are not arts-specialty schools are not eligible to apply at this time even if those schools have an arts concentration (unless they have Title 1 status). Applicants visit our website to submit LOIs online along with an attached resume or curriculum vitae (please do not include work samples.) Step 2: Final Applications Following a review of the Letters of Intent, a select number of candidates will be invited to submit a final application. Finalists will be asked to submit a full project description, project budget and all available supporting materials (including notification of venue acceptances and mentor letters). South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education conference set for October

The South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education is hosting its annual Arts Integration Conference Oct. 2 and 3 in Columbia at the Marriott, located at 1200 Hampton St.

For the past 12 years, SCAAE’s annual professional development conference has provided educators with an opportunity to learn how the arts effectively engage students. This year’s conference, The Arts Initiate Learning, will include sessions that address the role of arts integration in 2014’s biggest initiatives, including Common Core, Educator Evaluation, Student Assessment, the new Core Arts Standards, STEAM and Read to Succeed (Literacy Development).

Keynote speaker Lynn Tuttle is director of arts education at the Arizona Department of Education. Her duties include acting as a liaison to the state’s arts educators; providing professional development in Arizona’s Academic Arts Standards, arts assessment and arts integration; and promoting quality arts education programs in Arizona’s schools. She co-chaired the Arizona Arts Education Census Committee, which published the 2010 Arizona Arts Education Census, documenting access and availability of arts education in Arizona’s district and charter schools. She has keynoted for The Kennedy Center’s 2013 Partners in Education conference and the 2013 Biannual Maine Arts Education Conference, and has presented for Americans for the Arts, Arts Education Partnership, the Educational Theatre Association, the Kennedy Center Alliances for Arts Education Network, and other organizations.
