2019 North Charleston Arts Fest coming May 1-5
Performances, activities, and exhibits will take place throughout city
The annual North Charleston Arts Fest is now just weeks away, set to take place May 1-5.
The celebration of arts and culture highlights the talents of national, regional, and local artists and performers in the areas of dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and literature. Performances, activities, and exhibits are scheduled to take place in a variety of venues throughout the city of North Charleston, including libraries, community centers, businesses, and parks. Many of the offerings are free, and those that are ticketed are moderately priced.
Recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society as a Top 20 Event in both 2008 and 2018, the North Charleston Arts Fest is now entering its 37th year. Arts Fest offerings include:
concerts ranging from classical to contemporary,
theatre presentations,
dance performances,
children’s programs,
workshops,
demonstrations,
lectures,
exhibitions,
receptions,
public art installations,
and more.
The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department, which organizes and presents the event, is introducing some major changes to this year’s festival programming.
Most notable is the discontinuation of the two-day Arts Fest Expo at the Charleston Area Convention Center, and introduction of the one-day World Arts Expo at North Charleston Riverfront Park. The new event will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission and parking.
“A number of factors have encouraged us to switch our focus in 2019 to a new event that highlights some of the most popular components of the Arts Expo we’ve previously produced at the Convention Center,” explains Cultural Arts Director Kyle Lahm. “The World Arts Expo is our new flagship event celebrating visual and performing arts from cultures around the world. Patrons can enjoy the spring weather while experiencing a diverse line-up of music and dance performances, live art demonstrations, multi-cultural food offerings, art & craft vendors, hands-on activities, roving entertainment, and a kid’s zone.”
Despite this change, Exhibit Hall A at the Charleston Area Convention Center will continue to host the Arts Fest’s Judged Art & Photography, South Carolina Palmetto Hands Fine Craft, and Tri-County Youth Art Exhibitions during the entire run of the Arts Fest, May 1-5. Viewing hours are Wednesday, May 1, 6-8 p.m. (opening reception); Thursday-Saturday, May 2-4, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, May 5, 12-6 p.m.
Another new event called the Arts Fest Exhibition Encore will be introduced in 2019 as a means to spotlight these exhibits. The Exhibition Encore on Sunday, May 5, from 12-6 p.m., serves as a closing reception and celebration, allowing patrons to view the artwork in a festive atmosphere and make final decisions on purchases. In addition to the vast array of artwork on display, the event offers musical entertainment, live art demonstrations, hands-on activities, and more.
Theatre and Dance
Theatre and dance offerings during this year’s Arts Fest include everything from showcases and improv comedy sketches, to one-woman shows and full stage productions.
Award-winning sister act Gracie & Lacy make a dazzling return to the Arts Fest in a dinner theatre performance of Gloriously Gatsby on Wednesday, May 1, at the North Charleston Marriott. Their Jazz Era throwback production showcases the glitz and glam of the 1920s & '30s through song and dance.
Theatre 99 will be doing a little song and dance of their own by taking on-the-spot audience suggestions during their popular Improv Riot! comedy show, which is popping up at The Sparrow in Park Circle on the same evening.
Lady in White Productions will offer a one-night-only performance of Big Mama on Friday, May 3. The original musical, written by Ade Ofunniyin and directed by Samelia Adams, centers on performers’ experiences as members of the Theatre Owners Booking Association, the vaudeville circuit for African American musicians, comedians, and actors in the 1920s.
Arts Fest patrons can also catch a musical at Midtown Productions. Their reprise of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s West End and Broadway hit musical Tell Me On a Sunday has a 10-show run taking place between May 2 and 18. The production stars Allison Sharpley and is directed by Sheri Grace Wenger, who received the 2013 Theatre Charleston Award for “Outstanding Director of a Musical” for her work on this production.
Dancefx Charleston will present its second annual storybook show, Wonderland, on Saturday, May 4, at the Fort Dorchester High School Auditorium. The production features a series of dance performances woven together with narrated scenes from the beloved tale of Alice in Wonderland.
Fort Dorchester will also host a Youth Dance Showcase featuring performances by Dance Moves Youth Company and Summerville Dance Academy on Sunday, May 5.
Music
This year’s musical offerings vary widely, with numerous afternoon and evening concerts scheduled throughout the five days of the festival. In addition to performances of contemporary jazz, blues, soul, and variety tunes at the usual Arts Fest venues like North Charleston’s public libraries and senior centers, this year’s festival also includes musical offerings at new venues such as The Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel on the former Charleston Naval Base and Midtown Theatre. Another addition to the 2019 Arts Fest music line-up is the Park Circle Pickin’ Crawl, taking place in four locations along East Montague Avenue in the Olde Village area of North Charleston on Sunday, May 5. The day-long series of bluegrass & Americana concerts are all within walking distance from one another with no cover charge at any of the venues.
Visual Arts
Visual art offerings unique to this year’s festival include Honoring the Heroines of the Civil Rights Movement, an exhibition of quilted swing coats by Patricia A. Montgomery of Oakland, Calif.; Balancing Act, a collection of new paintings by the Arts Fest’s poster design competition winner Joseph Kameen; and The Culture: Part 2, a display of new work by the City of North Charleston’s current artist-in-residence Quintin Chaplin.
Other visual art exhibitions include the aforementioned Judged Fine Art and Photography Exhibitions, Tri-County Youth Art Exhibition, and the inaugural Tri-County High School Sculpture Exhibition, and the 18th Annual South Carolina Palmetto Hands Juried Fine Craft Exhibition on view in Exhibit Hall A at the Charleston Area Convention Center; the 14th Annual National Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition installed at North Charleston Riverfront Park; and the 13th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition: BLACK GOLD on display at North Charleston City Hall. In addition, the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is continuing its partnership with the College of Charleston School of the Arts Sculpture Department to present public art installations in green spaces throughout the City. These installations, as well as a number of the exhibitions presented as components of the festival, will remain on view well after the festival concludes on May 5.
Complete information on all 2019 North Charleston Arts Fest offerings, including event and exhibition details, site maps, and social media contest rules, are available at NorthCharlestonArtsFest.com.
Applications are currently being accepted for booth space at the World Arts Expo at Riverfront Park and Arty Block Party. Entry instructions for the Festival’s Judged Fine Art Exhibition, Judged Photography Exhibition, Tri-County Youth Art Exhibition, and Tri-County High School Sculpture Exhibition, as well as volunteer sign-up forms are also available. After determining the award winners, Lilly Wei offered the following juror’s statement:
"I would like to begin by congratulating all the artists in this wonderful exhibition and wishing you much success. It is never easy to choose and even more difficult to select just one “best in show,” and one “outstanding merit” but it is good that a few others can be singled out also. I would further state the obvious, that these endeavors are inevitably subjective, influenced by the juror’s own inclinations and criteria, conscious and unconscious. I would add that these are my readings of the works, not necessarily those of the artists although that is what art should do—evoke myriad responses from its viewers. That said, Joni Younkins-Herzog’s Vuida earned Best inShow. I very much liked its playfulness and a subversive feminism that quickly shifted into the feminist, as the flower became a trumpet of sorts, a loudspeaker, perhaps, that says that flowers, (and women) should speak out, boldly broadcasting messages that need to be heard. She upends a traditional still life vanitas motif about ephemerality into something more political, activist, and of the moment."

African American fiber artists sought for A Piece of Peace exhibition in North Charleston
Deadline is March 1, 2016
The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is seeking entries from African American textile artists from across the nation for a special exhibition presented as a component of the 2016 North Charleston Arts Festival, taking place April 29 - May 7 in North Charleston, S.C. African American artists, ages 18 and up, working in fiber and living in the United States, Mexico, or Canada, are invited to participate in the 10th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition, titled A Piece of Peace. The exhibition will be on display at North Charleston City Hall from April 30-June 20, 2016. A $30 entry fee applies and allows artists to submit up to four entries. The application is strictly available online at www.NorthCharlestonCulturalArtsDepartment.SlideRoom.com. Deadline for entries is Tuesday, March 1, 2016.
Curated by award winning and nationally exhibiting textile artist, Torreah “Cookie” Washington, this unique exhibition offers African American fiber artists a showcase to display their original and innovative designs. This year’s exhibition calls for fiber art inspired by the concept of peace. The challenge for this special exhibit is for artists to create a fiber work, such as an art quilt, doll, wearable art piece, etc., that expresses their personal vision of peace. In today's world, many are feeling lost, frightened, or overwhelmed. Often times life can feel tumultuous and fractured. Where can one go to find a "piece of peace"? How does one find a “true north”? For some, it is through a long meditation, a walk in the woods, or a good book. Others find their piece of peace through action - caring for a beloved child or aging parent, spending time with an animal friend, worshipping in a sacred space, or working towards social justice to help change the world in both small and large ways. "We are all so very excited that we are celebrating 10 years of producing high quality textile art as part of this magnificent festival,” says Washington. “Each year this show grows bigger and better, and we are particularly thrilled by this beautiful, healing theme."
Following the close of the show, up to 30 works will be selected to tour the state through the South Carolina State Museum’s 2016/2017 Traveling Exhibitions Program. Sites across South Carolina may request the exhibit to tour in their facilities, thus providing additional exposure for the selected artists.
The 10th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition: A Piece of Peace will be on display 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily from April 30 - June 20, 2016, on the 1st and 2nd floors of North Charleston City Hall, located at 2500 City Hall Lane in North Charleston. Admission is free. A free public reception in honor of the artists will be held at City Hall on Thursday, May 5, 2016, from 6 - 8 p.m.

2015 SC Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Competition & Exhibition winners announced
[caption id="attachment_20191" align="alignright" width="225"] Susan Lenz, In Box CXXXVII (Fiber)[/caption]
Fine craft artists and artisans from across South Carolina were invited to participate in the 14th Annual South Carolina Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Competition & Exhibition, the state’s only juried fine craft competition and exhibition. Organized annually by the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department, the show was presented May 1-9 as a component of the 2015 North Charleston Arts Festival.
Following an extensive pre-jury process, 41 applicants were asked to participate and 104 entries were submitted in the categories of clay, fiber, metal, wood, and 3D mixed media. Cash awards totaling $5,000 were made at the sole discretion of the juror, internationally renowned jeweler and paper artist, Jocelyn Chateauvert. After making her selections, Chateauvert stated, “The exciting part about jurying this show was imagining the hand working each element and surface of the artwork. It is evidence of the hand and choice of materials to convey a thought or feeling that is most compelling whether the medium be wood, ceramic, or the stuff from everyday life.”
After awarding ribbons, Chateauvert also selected pieces from the show to assemble a South Carolina Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Traveling Exhibition, which will tour the state through the South Carolina State Museum’s 2015/2016 Traveling Exhibitions Program. The Traveling Exhibitions Program gives galleries, museums, and art centers across South Carolina the opportunity to request the exhibit to tour their facilities, thus providing additional exposure for the selected artists.
In addition to awards given by the juror, four pieces were selected for City of North Charleston Purchase Awards. These pieces will be added to the City of North Charleston’s Permanent Public Art Collection, which is on display within North Charleston City Hall throughout most of the year.

Art Walk
Local fine artists, fine craft artisans, photographers, and sculptors are invited to exhibit and sell their original works during the Arts Festival's Art Walk. Other Art Walk offerings include live music, art demos, and kid’s activities, creating a festive evening of art and culture for the whole family to enjoy.

Display screens can be furnished by the Cultural Arts Department at no charge to assist the artist in presenting his/her work. Display equipment for 3D artwork is available on a limited basis.
The deadline for submission of applications for the Art Walk is April 20, 2015. Judged Fine Art Competition & Exhibition
Fine artists are invited to enter original work into the annual North Charleston Arts Festival Judged Fine Art Competition & Exhibition and compete for cash prizes totaling up to $4,675. Submissions are accepted in five categories: acrylic, oil, drawing/pastel, watercolor, and mixed media. Awards will be at the sole discretion of the judge, Wim Roefs, an independent curator, author, art consultant, exhibition designer, and owner of The if ART Gallery in Columbia, SC. Roefs is the chairman of the board of Columbia's 701 Center for Contemporary Art (701 CCA) and was the organization's founding volunteer executive director from 2008-2013. He chairs the curatorial team for 701 CCA and has curated dozens of exhibitions for his own gallery and art institutions throughout South Carolina and beyond.
Fine art entries will be accepted at the Charleston Area Convention Center on Wednesday and Thursday, April 29 and 30, from noon to 7 p.m., as well as Friday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to noon. Artists may enter any combination of categories with a maximum of four entries in one or more categories. A non-refundable fee of $10 per entry is due at drop-off.
Judged Photography Competition and Exhibition
Professional and amateur photographers are invited to enter original prints into the annual North Charleston Arts Festival Judged Photography Competition & Exhibition and compete for cash prizes totaling up to $2,175.
Submissions will be accepted in the Professional/Advanced division or Amateur division under the categories of color, monochrome, or digitally enhanced. Judging and awards will be based on the Photographic Society of America Print Guidelines. Three competent judges in the field of photography will score entries using the 3-9 range of scores. Each judge will evaluate each entry as a whole, considering the areas of impact, composition, and technique. However, there is no specific weighting or allotment of points for each category. This system is used efficiently and effectively by many arts councils, at international exhibitions, and by camera clubs. It allows an adequate qualitative separation of entries while lessening the potential for a large number of the higher scoring entries having identical scores. In the event of a tie-breaker, judges will choose the winning entry.
Photography entries will be accepted at the Charleston Area Convention Center on Wednesday and Thursday, April 29 and 30, from noon to 7 p.m. Artists may enter any combination of categories with a maximum of four entries in one or more categories. A non-refundable fee of $5 per entry is due at drop-off.
The Judged Fine Art and Photography Exhibitions are free and open to the public throughout the North Charleston Arts Festival. Viewing times are Saturday, May 2, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Sunday, May 3, 2 –5 p.m.; Monday through Friday, May 4-8, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; and Saturday, May 9, 9 a.m. – noon.
Awards for 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and Honorable Mentions in each division and category for both the Judged Fine Art and Judged Photography Competitions will be announced at an artist reception on Friday, May 1, from 6 - 7 p.m. at the Charleston Area Convention Center. Musical entertainment will be provided by David Archer and Abe White and the public is welcome to attend.
The North Charleston Arts Festival, scheduled May 1-9, is one of the most comprehensive arts festivals in the state, providing thousands of residents and visitors with an array of nearly 200 performances, exhibitions, and activities. North Charleston Arts Festival reveals 2015 design competition winner
North Charleston, S.C. artist Karole Turner Campbell has been named the winner of the 2015 North Charleston Arts Festival Design Competition. Campbell's mixed media piece, "Jubilee," (pictured above), will be used to promote the 2015 North Charleston Arts Festival, taking place May 1-9. The artist received a $500 purchase award, and the piece will become part of the city of North Charleston’s Public Art Collection.
Campbell's design was selected from 47 entries by artists from across the state. The review panel judged entries based on quality, originality, appeal to festival patrons from a broad range of backgrounds, and ability to convey the spirit of the festival as a public celebration of arts and culture.
According to Campbell, "Jubilee" is a visual pun that explores a different approach to traditional color theory. Created with a variety of media including acrylic, oil, reclaimed Styrofoam, and paper, the abstract piece depicts an island of blue “floating and dancing” amidst a yellow sea. “The materials I use are diverse and go beyond just making marks, combining colors, or incorporating objects onto a surface,” she explains. “I am fascinated with layering and creating real or implied texture and this fascination leads me to consistently uncover new, distinct modes of expression.”
Campbell earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting from the City University of New York, a Bachelor of Science degree in art education from North Carolina A&T State University, and an art major diploma from the prestigious High School of Music & Art in New York City. A retired New York City principal, she now works as a full-time visual artist. Her body of work is quite eclectic, ranging from representational to abstract, and two dimensional to three dimensional. Recently she has been creating conceptual, mixed media pieces that juxtapose antithetical ideas and materials to engage viewers in an open-ended conversation that can be ethereal and visceral, sublime and earthly, universal and specific, and spiritual and profane.
Since moving to the Lowcountry in 2006, Campbell has immersed herself in the local arts community by exhibiting her works in solo shows, group shows, and galleries. She has curated two invitational group shows for the MOJA Arts Festival and served as a juror for the Avery Research Center’s national juried exhibition in 2011. In 2012, she was a featured artist at Penn Center’s Centennial Celebration Exhibition and exhibited her work in a solo show, Eternal Vigilantes, at the Avery Research Center in Charleston, S.C., the following year. In addition, her work has been displayed in a number of venues and events throughout the state, including the City Gallery at Waterfront Park in downtown Charleston, ArtFields in Lake City, the Charleston County Library, the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery, the North Charleston City Gallery, the North Charleston Arts Festival, and the S.C. Palmetto Hands Juried Fine Craft Exhibition.
Campbell's work, including the winning piece, will be on display at the North Charleston City Gallery throughout the month of May 2015. The public is invited to meet the artist at the gallery on May 2 and 3 during the Main Event of the North Charleston Arts Festival. Curated by award-winning and nationally exhibiting textile artist, Torreah “Cookie” Washington, this unique exhibition offers African American fiber artists a showcase to display their original and innovative designs. This year’s installment calls for fiber pieces inspired by the life of Dr. Maya Angelou, a phenomenal woman, daughter of the South, mother of the civil rights movement, speaker of truth to power, and inspiration to so many women from all walks of life. The challenge for this tribute exhibit is for artists to create a fiber work, such as an art quilt, doll, wearable art piece, etc., that expresses their personal relationship to Angelou, her work, and her life. Artists may address how Angelou has made their artistic journey more meaningful, which of her words inspires them to keep keeping on, and/or how she has helped him/her to RISE.
Following the close of the show, up to 30 works will be selected to tour the state through the South Carolina State Museum’s 2015/2016 Traveling Exhibitions Program. Sites across South Carolina may request the exhibit to tour in their facilities, thus providing additional exposure for the selected artists.
The 9th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition: Maya Angelou will be on display 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily from April 30 - June 19, 2015, on the 1st and 2nd floors of North Charleston City Hall, located at 2500 City Hall Lane in North Charleston. Admission is free. A free public reception in honor of the artists will be held at City Hall on May 7, 2015, from 6 - 8 p.m.
