One Night With Don Juan

STATE OF TEMPTATION: With rolling premieres taking place across the nation, Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain Suite makes its South Carolina debut. This work draws on themes from Higdon’s opera, which is based on the award-winning book of the same name by Charles Frazier. Internationally celebrated pianist and recording artist Alessio Bax performs Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 – a piece that stands as a testament that the composer’s creativity was virtually endless. This program opens with Strauss’ popular tone-poem Don Juan, which scandalized and delighted audiences in 1889 because they had never heard such graphically suggestive music before.
