Curator’s Statement:

Paperwork by Gene Merritt (1936-2015) is a small re-introduction of drawings that Merritt had actually called paperwork. Merritt’s work illustrates a common interest between Paul Matheny and Tom Stanley (currently on exhibit in the West Gallery). Merritt was a self-taught artist that Matheny and Stanley encountered and befriended in Rock Hill, SC. Little did they know he would emerge as an internationally renowned artist of the Outsider genre.
