Call for Entries: Wish You Were Here: The Art of Sandy Island

Since 1908, Sandy Island sat on official maps like the National Geographic Society and Google Earth, 700 miles off the coast of Australia. Sandy Island’s existence went unquestioned until 2012, when a survey vessel undiscovered it; the island simply wasn’t there. In fact, it never was. While we perceive locations as solid and permanent, they are, in fact, just as fluid and subjective as any human experience.

Wish You Were Here: The Art of Sandy Island invites artists across various mediums to envision a place that could have been—since it never existed—and encourages us to reflect on our connection to locations and the comfort we seek in the illusion of their certainty.

This group exhibition will run from Jan. 9-Feb. 20, 2026 at Richland Library Main in Downtown Columbia, SC.
