2D artwork for installation at Hilton Head Island Airport’s new terminal
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, August 1, 2025
The Hilton Head Island Airport Artwork Selection Committee seeks entries for a visually striking image to be reproduced and featured on a large prominent glass wall installation in the airport’s new terminal.
This image will be placed in a high-traffic area of the airport.
This exciting 2-D public art installation will serve as a welcoming experience for visitors and reflect the unique character of Hilton Head Island. The Committee seeks entries that reflect the island’s natural beauty, rich culture, vibrant community, and sense of place.
The selected artwork will be reproduced on vinyl and placed on the glass wall that separates the security area from the passenger gates. The wall is approximately 16 feet tall and 28 feet wide. Proposed images must be able to be reproduced at this scale (vector file will be required). Entries may feature any medium of artwork, including digital art, that may be digitally reproduced for a vinyl application according to the specifications provided by the vinyl vendor.
The image will be installed across 16 glass panels that cover an area that is approximately 29 feet wide and 11 feet tall (shown at right).
A $1,500 stipend will be paid to the artist selected for the use of their work in this public space.
Application requirements
- Each entry must include the information below. Artists may submit multiple entries.
- Entry fee: $10
- Artist’s name, email, phone number, and place of residence.
- At least one image of the artwork(s) to be considered (a vector image file will be required if selected).
- The title (if applicable), Hilton Head Island location depicted (if applicable), and a brief description of the work (media, date created, inspiration, etc.).
- Artists may submit up to three artworks/entries.

Selection criteria, eligibility and timeline
Artworks submitted should depict aspects of Hilton Head Island’s character, natural beauty, culture, or community. A selection committee (including representatives from the Hilton Head Island Airport, local government officials, art professionals, and community members) will review all submissions and determine which image is selected for the installation.
- The content of the artwork(s) should relate well to the surroundings and be attractive from a distant view, as well as up close.
- Designs must not contain any advertisements for any brand, business, product or viewpoint. Content deemed sensitive will not be permitted (i.e. drugs/alcohol, nudity, violence, etc.).
- Artists are not required to be from Hilton Head Island or South Carolina.
- The committee will review entries based on artistic excellence, representation of Hilton Head Island, creativity, and ability to be enlarged for a visually appealing installation.
- After installation, photographs of the final installation of the image on glass may be reproduced in print, digital, or video media in promotional pieces for the Hilton Head Island Airport.
