Our frequent partners at South Carolina Humanities consider themselves thrilled to announce that Dr. Randy Akers, former SC Humanities executive director was awarded the Order of the Palmetto—the highest civilian honor in South Carolina.

Via email, they said, “This prestigious award recognizes his nearly four decades of visionary leadership, advocacy, and dedication to ensuring that the humanities thrive in every corner of our state.”

Akers will be recognized for this extraordinary honor at the 2025 SC Humanities Awards Luncheon and Ceremony on Oct. 16. This year’s celebration is expected to highlight Akers’ legacy but also the outstanding individuals and organizations advancing humanities across South Carolina.

Congratulations to Randy on yet another (well deserved) recognition.

Dreher High teacher is S.C. Art Educator of the Year

from WLTX

The South Carolina Art Education Association (SCAEA) recently named Dreher High School art teacher Katie Pfrommer the 2025 South Carolina Art Educator of the Year. It is one of the highest honors an art educator can receive in the state (but, ahem, not the highest).

The annual award recognizes a K–12 art teacher who has demonstrated excellence in teaching, program development, and advocacy for the arts. Nominees must be active members of SCAEA for at least three consecutive years.

Pfrommer, known for her creativity, student engagement, and passion for the visual arts, said the award is both humbling and rewarding.
