Charleston Jazz Academy announces new leadership

Charleston Jazz announced the appointment of Demetrius Doctor today as the new director of its Charleston Jazz Academy.

Notably, Demetrius Doctor’s journey into the world of jazz was catalyzed by none other than esteemed journalist and Charleston Jazz co-founder Jack McCray. Because of their introduction, Doctor’s passion for jazz is said to have flourished, leading him to prominence in the jazz community.

According to the announcement, Doctor’s vision for the Charleston Jazz Academy is “deeply rooted in fostering a culture of exploration and innovation. He aims to cultivate musicians who are not only proficient in their craft but are also relentless in their pursuit of pushing boundaries and elevating artistic expression. His commitment to nurturing creativity and encouraging students to constantly evolve promises to further enhance the academy’s reputation as a hub of musical excellence.”

The retirement of former director Basil Kerr put this new chapter in motion for the academy. Kerr, who was known for his dedication and contributions to the academy’s growth, expressed support for Doctor’s appointment and expects the academy to thrive under Doctor’s leadership.
