Workshop: From Pigment to Paint

Tools for creating paint, including a mortar and pestle, beaker, water, pigments, and palette knife.

In this special one-day workshop, participants will learn how to create oil paints from scratch. Through this process, we will uncover the origin stories of color through an art historical lens and, more specifically, the history of the five different all-natural and non-toxic pigments that we will be using in this unique workshop. From the step-by-step process of breaking down natural materials into powdered pigment to mixing that pigment with binding medium, students will create their oil colors. Taught by artist Katelyn Chapman.

Each student will go home with five tubes of handmade oil paint.
