Why Paper? is an exhibition of sculpture primarily constructed of paper, on view March 30th through May 1st at Greenville Technical College’s Riverworks Gallery. Heea Crownfield and Sandy Singletary sculptures reference the everyday transformed into narrations, memories, maybe even icons. Ms. Singletary’s tableaus consist of life-sized objects constructed with papier mâché paired with intricately hand-built, unglazed porcelain objects. Ms. Crownfield macerates her daily detritus, tea bags, onion skins, fabric into handmade paper to build abstracted forms. Both artists merge reality with spirituality. Both artists have chosen to build in paper because of its physical properties. The hundreds of years of paper history add a dimension of archeology and timelessness to their sculpture though the every-day objects they reference are contemporary.
