The Index of Southerness: A lecture by Dr. Rick Bunch on Southbound’s GIS map

The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art in Charleston presents a lecture by Dr. Rick Bunch, a geographic information science (GIS) and spatial cognition specialist, January 29. Bunch designed the Index of Southerness, an interactive map of the South, representing everything from street name maps to data collected on prison populations and churchgoers, among other topics. Available inside the exhibition spaces and on the project website southboundproject.org, this Index of Southerness allows viewers to switch on-and-off indicators and arrive at their own maps of the South. Bunch is a Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, & Sustainability at UNC Greensboro. He has more than 20 years of experience in GIS and the conceptualization, modeling, and analysis of geographically referenced data.
