The Great Barrier – An Installation by Flavia Lovatelli
Having researched the egregious Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Tapp’s Arts Center Artist in Residence Flavia Lovatelli discovered that the accumulation of plastic, condensed into a naturally forming swirl from converging currents, had been conservatively measured as a size larger than the state of Texas. Lovatelli was motivated to ignite several community-based recycling projects aimed at reclaiming material and redefining the meaning of trash. Her latest project, The Great Barrier, is a 46-foot-long barrier reef constructed from cups, plastic bags, and other detritus. The installation is on view at Tapp’s Arts Center August 3 – September 1. Opening reception August 3 from 6 – 9 p.m.
