Rufous: The Stuff of Life

The literal definition of “Rufous” is a reddish-brown color that artists Becca Barnet and Michelle Jewell equate with the visceral physicality of being. Both artists literally stuff animals; Barnet specializes in vintage taxidermy, while Jewell makes handmade stuffed creatures. Rufous: The Stuff of Life is on display at Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston until Saturday, March 28th. With more than a year of planning and mounting of this exhibition, the artists have worked independently and collaboratively on projects featuring the same subject matter. Despite how similar the principles and processes are, the end results are wildly different from one another.
