Robert Insley: Renty’s Bell
The Horry County Museum and The AVX Foundation present a lecture by Robert Insley February 17. Insley’s book, Renty’s Bell, is the story of enslaved African American and master builder Renty Tucker, who built one of the most elaborate slave chapels ever constructed. Tucker became a respected and active community member in Georgetown County in the segregated South during reconstruction and into the Jim Crow era. His legacy, in spite of seemingly insurmountable challenges, helped to dispel stereotypes and paved the way for future generations. Free.
