Parchman: the Heart of Hell at Coastal Carolina University

Coastal Carolina University in Conway presents Parchman: the Heart of Hell April 18 in Edwards Recital Hall. Photographer R. Kim Rushing exhibits his work and discusses his experiences in the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman, an institution that covers 46 square miles in the Mississippi Delta. Rushing spent years visiting the inmates in the historic penitentiary, building a level of rapport and trust that allowed him to create work conveying their conditions, details of daily life and perspectives. Rushing’s book, Parchman (University Press of Mississippi, 2016), offers, through photographs and their own handwritten letters, a glimpse into the lives of 18 volunteer inmates. Rushing is a professor in the Department of Art at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., where he has taught photography for 23 years. His photographs have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines.
