Opera at USC: At the Boar’s Head and Firebird Motel
Opera at USC’s free Evening of One Acts features David Conte’s Firebird Motel and Gustav Holst’s At the Boar’s Head. Performances are April 11 at 7:30 & April 12 at 3:00, at the USC School of Music, 813 Assembly Street in Columbia. The program features In the first, denizens of the seedy Firebird Motel wait out a violent storm on the edge of the Mojave Desert, Christmas week 1994. San Francisco Chronicle wrote “Firebird Motel weaves a hypnotic spell. Plaintive solos alternate with vibrant duets and lustrous trios, punctuated by Conte’s lovely chorales. Conte’s Firebird takes flight on the wings of its music.” Gramophone called At the Boar’s Head, Holst’s last opera, “marvelously entertaining listening.” Sir John Falstaff and the future King Henry V tell tales and enjoy the company of various thieves and rebels at the Boar’s Head Tavern on a midsummer’s eve in 1403 London.
