OLLI Presents “Make Your Own Cigar Box Guitar”
OLLI at Clemson University offers a class in making your own cigar box guitar, March 28 and April 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Charles K. Cheezem Education Center in Clemson. The cigar box guitar uses an empty cigar box for a resonator, thus the name. The earliest had one or two strings; the modern model typically uses three or more. Potentially dating back to the 1840s, the instruments have recently undergone a resurgence in popularity – the 2008 film, “Songs Inside The Box” was shot primarily at an annual Huntsville, Alabama event called the “Cigar Box Guitar Extravaganza.” Students will work from kits to assemble cigar box 3-string guitars, and learn how to play simple melodies using a slide. Register by February 22.
