“O Sole Mio” and Other “Iconic” Songs of Italy

OLLI at Clemson University presents “O Sole Mio” and Other “Iconic” Songs of Italy with Marina Joyce. This course will explore Italy’s musical heritage beyond the operas of the 19th and early 20th centuries, specifically addressing the “canzoni,” songs that traveled worldwide carried by voices and hearts of Italian emigrants. Many songs have kept dialects such as Sicilian and Neapolitan alive and often represent the “Sounds of Italy.” We will listen to pieces such as “O sole mio,” “Torna a Surriento,” “Funiculi’ Funicula,’” as well as the more modern “Volare.” This workshop takes place February 28th and March 7th, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Cheezem Education Center in Clemson. $17-$47.
