Mary Edna Fraser: Above, Between, Below

Mary Edna Fraser fills the Waterfront City Gallery in Charleston with her signature large scale batiks on silk in Above, Between, Below—depicting breathtaking perspectives of space, earth, and deep sea. The ambitious exhibition bridges cutting-edge scholarship and the ancient art of batik—a technique of hand-dyeing fabrics by using removable wax as a dye resist. Working closely with collaborators Ted Maxwell (Planetary Scientist Emeritus, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum), Orrin H. Pilkey (Geology Professor Emeritus, Duke University) and Cindy Lee Van Dover (Biologist, Director of the Duke Marine Lab), the artist has drawn upon their insights to create images that bring the grandeur of distant landscapes near to us. Artist’s Lecture Saturday, April 18th at 2 PM. On view from March 21 through May 3, 2015. City Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM & Saturday and Sunday, Noon to 5 PM.
