Live at Firefly: The “Suite” Sounds of Ellington

As one of the most influential figures in jazz, Duke Ellington created a distinctive big band sound, continuing to play what he called “American music” until shortly before his death in 1974. In the words of Ellington, “music is how I live, why I live and how I will be remembered.” Throughout his 50-year career, Ellington wrote a few long-form multi-movement works, using the suite format to give his jazz a more empowering meaning, resonance and purpose. On March 25, 2022, your Charleston Jazz Orchestra will showcase two memorable, vital and innovative suites from Ellington’s late career – The New Orleans Suite and The Far East Suite.
