Hotaru No Haka/Grave of the Fireflies

Coastal Carolina University Department of History presents Hotaru No Haka/Grave of the Fireflies October 9 at 5 p.m. at Coastal Theater at Lib Jackson Student Union on the main campus in Conway. This 1988 Japanese anime film is set in Kobe, Japan, and tells the story of Seita and Setsuko, siblings who survive American bombings during the final months of World War II and struggle to endure life afterward. The film is based on the 1967 autobiographical short story of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka. It will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles. Following the screening, Brandon Palmer, CCU professor and chair of the Department of History, will lead on the historical and personal impacts of military by governments.
