Hands on History Workshop: Sweetgrass Baskets
The Charleston Museum offers a Hands on History Workshop in Sweetgrass Basketmaking, January 30th. Children will learn how to start their own sweetgrass basket with help from local artisan Sarah Edwards-Hammond. Her family is descended from West African artists who brought the craft to the Lowcountry some 300 years ago. Learn the history of this local art form and create art of your own. This workshop is part of a series where children can get their hands on history. Each workshop features a local artisan and a specialized tour of Museum collections. This program is for children ages 8 and up; adults can pay the child rate if they would like to participate. Reservations required. $15/ Museum members, $20/Non-members. This event is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
