Gordon Parks’ “The Learning Tree” film & Chautauqua discussion
Chautauqua History Alive presents a free screening and discussion of Gordon Parks’ “The Learning Tree” – the first Hollywood studio film directed by an African American. Gordon Parks, internationally famous “Life Magazine” photojournalist, produced and directed “The Learning Tree,” and wrote the semi-autobiographic novel on which the film is based, the screenplay and the film music. Come of age with a young boy in a small Kansas town where, 90 years ago, the races lived in uneasy accommodation. “The Learning Tree” was one of the first films to be selected for preservation on the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
