Furman University Presents Music of West Africa Featuring Mande Strings
Furman University will host a concert featuring Mande Strings October 4th at 7:30 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall on the campus in Greenville. Mande Strings delivers a demonstration of both modern and traditional Malian sounds, blending influences from West Africa’s Bambara, Soninke and Wassulu cultures. The evening features guitar, kora, vocals and two Malian ngoni styles—the lute variety jeli ngoni and harp-styled kamelen “youth” ngoni. Special guests include members of Asheville, N.C.-based Toubab Krewe. Co-sponsored by Furman Department of Music, Humanities at Furman, and Furman student organization Baba Africa. Free.
