Furman Symphony Orchestra presents Russian Masterworks

The Furman Symphony Orchestra will present a concert October 27 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium on campus in Greenville. The program includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s Procession of the Nobles from Mlada; Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, Op. 48; and the Firebird Suite by Stravinsky. As described in program notes by Bruce Gbur, “The Firebird, or Zhar-Ptitsa, is based on a Russian fairy tale and involves the magical bird of the title, a young prince, a captive princess, and a terrible ogre who cannot be killed until the secret location of his heart is found.” The orchestera, nearly 70 members strong, is conducted by Thomas Joiner, now in his 20th season as conductor of the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra in North Carolina. Tickets $5 – $15.
