Fine Arts Talk – Fletcher Williams III, “Charleston Souvenir & Transcendence”
Winthrop University presents a Fine Arts Talk with Fletcher Williams III on “Charleston Souvenir & Transcendence,” November 10 at 7 p.m. in Rutledge 119. Williams is a multi-media artist whose works examine identity, history, and popular culture. He received his BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement in Science and Art (2010). As a native of Charleston, he’s gained the knowledge of local tradition and craft that are often used to comment on Charleston’s social divisions. For his latest project, Souvenir (March 2015), Fletcher illustrated a series of shootings that occurred throughout Charleston between September of 2013 and February of 2014. These works were an orchestrated collage of ancestral symbolism, pop-culture iconography and local craft.
