Exhibition: Reflections on a Southern Summer

The Johnson Collection presents Reflections on a Southern Summer, June 9-September 4 at TJC Gallery in Spartanburg. During the languid, gauzy days of summer in the South, leisure is a time-honored tradition… and an art in and of itself. Charged by the season’s lengthening light, verdant landscapes, and recreational offerings from summit to shoreline, artists have created lasting impressions of this region’s summers for centuries. Featuring works by Ernie Barnes, George Bellows, Margaret Burroughs, Lamar Dodd, William Dunlap, Maud Gatewood, Clementine Hunter, John Ross Key, Virginia Kiah, Helen LaFrance, Margaret Law, Charles McGee, Alice Smith, Eugene Thomason, and more, this exhibition seeks to stoke the embers of memory, honoring the abiding allure that the South holds as both a destination and homeplace. TJC Gallery is open Wednesday through Friday and the first Saturday of the month from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
