Black History Month Talk by Author Dr. Jonathan Bryant

Dr. Jonathan Bryant’s book, Dark Places of the Earth, tells the story of the slave ship Antelope landing Florida in 1820, well after the outlawing of the international slave trade in the U.S. Bryant recounts the Antelope’s fraught journey across the Atlantic, leading up to the momentous courtroom battle of 1825 that defined the moral and legal implications of slavery for a generation. The author, who is Professor of History at Georgia Southern University, will give a Black History Month Talk on slavery, corruption and the law in the young American republic, February 18 at Converse College in Spartanburg. The event is co-sponsored by Converse College, Spartanburg County Public Library, and Hub City Book Shop.
