Being There

Coastal Carolina University Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies presents a screening of the film, Being There November 13 at 5 p.m. in The Coastal Theater at CCU’s Lib Jackson Student Union. This Academy Award-winning film, directed by Hal Ashby,follows a childishly naive gardener (Peter Sellers) who, through a series of chance encounters and misunderstanding, becomes a trusted adviser to a powerful business man (Melvyn Douglas), becomes romantically involved with the man’s wife (Shirley MacLaine) and rises through the political marks in Washington D.C. Following the screening, Michael Ruse, associate professor in CCU’s Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, will lead a discussion on the nature of irony and the political context of the film, as well as a comparison to contemporary politics.
