Also Sprach Zarathustra on Screen: From 2001 to Wall-E
On November 21, 1896, Richard Strauss conducted the debut performance of his tone poem, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op.30. In 1968, director Stanley Kubrick featured the piece in his groundbreaking film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Since then, Also Sprach Zarathustra has been featured in dozens of films and television shows. On the 122nd anniversary of the tone poem’s 1896 debut, Dean Daniel Ennis and a faculty panel will discuss ways the film has been used (and misused?) in films. This event will include numerous film clips and an audience poll of their favorite Strauss-inspired movie moments. This event will be presented by the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts November 27 at 5 p.m. in Coastal Theater, Lib Jackson Student Union A-110 on Coastal Carolina University’s main campus. Free.
