Artist residencies offer new direction
Artist residencies are designed to offer artists time and space away from their daily obligations so that they may concentrate on developing and expanding their art. Some residencies charge a fee, and some offer funds for materials. The length of a residency can vary from one week to one year or longer. There are residency programs all over the United States, but here are four programs not far from South Carolina that are currently accepting applications. Elsewhere – Greensboro, North Carolina
Deadline: January 4, 2013
Elsewhere, a living museum set in a former thrift store, is accepting applications for 2013 residencies. Elsewhere residencies invite artists, curators, scholars, makers, storytellers, archivists and educators to contribute to and interpret Elsewhere’s concepts, collections and communities utilizing the museum’s immense 58-year collection of secondhand surplus as resource and inspiration for site-specific projects. Individuals and collaborative teams working across media, fields and disciplines are encouraged to apply. Residencies are for two to six week project periods. Hambidge – Raburn Gap, Georgia
Deadlines: January 15 for May through August; April 15 for September through December; September 15 for March and April of the following year
Hambidge provides a residency program that empowers artists and other creative thinkers from throughout the United States and around the world to explore, develop and express their creative voices. Located on 600 acres in the north Georgia mountains, Hambidge is a sanctuary of time and space that inspires artists working in a broad range of disciplines to create works of the highest caliber. Penland School of Crafts – Penland, North Carolina

The Penland School Resident Artist Program seeks to enrich the total educational experience at Penland by providing a stimulating, supportive environment for artists at transitional points in their careers. Penland resident artists are full-time, self-supporting craftspeople who live and work at the school for three years. Find out more
McColl Center for Visual Art — Charlotte, North Carolina

McColl Center for Visual Art’s Artist-in-Residence program is dedicated to supporting artists regionally, nationally and internationally and promoting contemporary art. Fusing a regional character with a national and international perspective, the Center is a place where artists work, conduct research and where exhibitions introduce a broad public to a variety of contemporary art practices by artists from around the world. The Center’s goal is to present art and artists in a way that engages and enriches the public while revealing the creative process through open studios, outreaches, community projects, exhibitions and educational programs.
