Away, Away Down South
Away, Away Down South at Greenville Technical College’s RIVERWORKS Gallery features printmaker Andrew Blanchard and photographer Eliot Dudik – both members of Oxford American Magazine’s 100 New Superstars of Southern Art. Southern Gothic denotes a particular genre whose sinister stories examine the eccentric in derelict settings to reveal cultural characteristics unique to the South. The exhibition’s images narrate stories of lost and suppressed ideals with violent overtones. Dudik’s photos of Civil War reenactors’ self-conscious deaths portray the sacrificial deaths of real soldiers for lost causes. Blanchard’s prints question the romanticizing of rural poverty as the simple life, hidden from our freshly-constructed cities. The exhibition runs May 12 – June 25. Free.
